Ashford ENG 380 Week 2 Discussion 2 Exploring the Ashford University Library Databases
Exploring the Ashford University Library Databases. As the tutorials in the Ashford University Library suggest, researching through Internet search engines like Google and researching through databases like EBSCO Host and JSTOR require different approaches. While search engines like Google connect to a much larger pool of records which come from a wide range of contexts, library databases contain a much smaller number of records, and most of these have gone through some kind of review process that allows for more control of the quality of the information.
The search interfaces of search engines and databases also differ. Library databases usually include more options for specifying a search by defining certain fields (e.g., author, title, publication year, subject headings, etc.). (An advanced search in Google also allows one to specify some fields like publication year, though databases usually allow for more customization.) In both the search engine Google and in library databases the Boolean operators AND OR and NOT can be used to specify a search. (Refer to Unit 3: Search Basics of the Ashford University Library Research Tutorial.)
