Ashford ENG 380 Week 2 Assignment Critical Analysis of a Scholarly Article
Critical Analysis of a Scholarly Article. Locate a scholarly article which you think could contribute to the development of your Final Paper. The article may reinforce your own understandings of the work(s), it may stand in complete opposition to your interpretations, or it may both share commonalities and be distinct from your own views of the literary work(s).
The purpose of this exercise is to help you critically analyze the scholarly article, to determine how the article relates (or does not relate) to your own thesis, and to decide how you will use the article to strengthen your own paper.
Consider this assignment as an opportunity to explore and to think through your evaluative and interpretive processes. After locating the article and determining how you believe it could be of use to you in your analysis, write a paper that addresses the following tasks and questions.
1. Provide the full APA citation for the article.
2. In one thorough paragraph, discuss the article’s central argument and determine whether or not the thesis
addresses a larger textual significance than basic analysis (e.g., the essay should address a serious social
or political concern; reflect on, for example, human nature, human relationships, or society).
3. In a thorough second paragraph, explain whether or not the argument was convincing. Provide at least
three specific examples to support your assessment.
4. In this second paragraph, also identify the assumptions that the author made in the article.
5. In a thorough third paragraph, discuss which critical approaches were used in the article, and evaluate whether or not these approaches were appropriate and well-founded. Provide at least three specific examples to support your assessment.
6. In a thorough fourth paragraph, explain whether or not a discussion of the article would contribute to your paper. If you decide to incorporate this source in your paper, discuss how you would relate it to your thesis.
7. Given the relationship between your thesis and that of this source, describe the explicit connections (or refutations) you need to make between your work and the article. Explain how you would introduce the article, while still placing at center stage your thesis. Identify a specific point(s) in your paper where discussion of the article would be beneficial.
The paper must be two to three pages in length and formatted according to APA style. For information regarding APA samples and tutorials, visit the Ashford Writing Center.
