Ashford ENG 318 Week 2 Assignment Writing Fiction
Writing Fiction. Due by Day 7. You will be creating several pieces of writing for the course and sharing this work each week for peer review and instructor comments. At the end of the course, you will submit a portfolio as part of the Final Project, which will showcase all of your revised work. This week, you will be writing a piece of fiction. Choose one of the following aesthetics:
• Write a story with a traditional narrative structure, plot, and character development. Make sure the narrative has a clear beginning, middle, and ending. This story should not be taken from real-life events, but it can be very loosely based on your own life experiences. Be sure to use a consistent point of view as outlined in Chapter 4 of your primary text. Also, this narrative should be in the realist mode of writing.
• Write a story that is more experimental in its form and/or use of craft techniques. This narrative can either be metafictional in that it mostly focuses on the act of storytelling itself (see Atwood’s “Happy Endings”), or in that it places an increased focus on its own techniques and form (see Barthelme’s “The Glass Mountain”); it can emphasize language over character development and plot (see Diane Williams’ stories); or it can use elements of magical realism to break the boundaries of traditional, realistic narrative (see Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” and Aimee Bender’s “The Rememberer”).
The story must be between three and five pages in length and formatted according to APA style. If you use sources (e.g., in an experimental narrative), be sure to properly cite all of your sources within the body of your story and on a separate References page.
