ENG 301 ENG301 ENG/301 WEEK 5 DQ AMERICAN POETRY & RACIAL TENSIONS (ASHFORD)
Ashford ENG 301 Week 5 Discussion American Poetry & Racial Tensions
1st Post Due by Day 3. American Poetry & Racial Tensions. Early works are clear expressions of the faith of the Pilgrim/Puritan writers, whereas the poetry of the 19th century is far more rooted in images and the investigation into the presence of the divine that one finds within. The poetry, formally, moves from European derivatives to a uniquely American poetry.
1. What similarities and/or differences do you see in the language and tone of poems by Whitman, Watkins Harper, and Dickinson and the earlier American writers?
2. Given the racial tensions of this period, do you think that poetry is an effective medium to address the plight of African American slaves? How does Watkins Harper’s poetry compare to the effectiveness of Douglass’s autobiography, which was required reading in Week 3?
3. What significant images to you find in the poems of Dickinson? Explain what they might represent. Is there any social or political commentary presented?
Your initial post should be at least 300 words in length. Support your claims with examples from required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts by Day 7.
